Zoom or pan is not working correctly

Zoom runs from 5% to 3200% and is anchored differently depending on how you invoke it: scroll-to-zoom centres on the cursor, while the keyboard shortcuts centre on the canvas. That difference accounts for most "zoom went somewhere unexpected" reports.

Symptoms

If one or more of these match what you are seeing, you are on the right page.

  • •Zooming with the scroll wheel drifts away from the area you meant to inspect
  • •Zoom refuses to go further in or out
  • •Zoom steps feel too coarse
  • •The canvas is visible but tiny and will not centre

Causes and fixes

Ordered from most to least likely. Work down the list — each cause is paired with what to do about it.

  1. 1

    Scroll-to-zoom anchors on the cursor, not the canvas centre.

    Place the cursor over the detail you want to inspect before scrolling. Use Ctrl+= and Ctrl+- instead when you want zoom anchored to the canvas centre.

    The zoom limit has been reached.

    The range is 5% to 3200%. If you need finer detail than 3200% allows, the composition is likely scaled smaller than it needs to be — consider working at a larger canvas size.

  3. 3

    The viewport is framed on the wrong thing.

    Ctrl+0 fits the whole canvas, Ctrl+1 goes to 100%, Ctrl+2 to 200%, and Ctrl+Shift+F zooms to the current selection. Right-click any layer and choose Zoom to Layer to frame one element.

  4. 4

    The pixel grid is confused with a zoom problem.

    Beyond 400% zoom a 1px grid appears if Pixel Grid is enabled in Canvas Settings. It is a guide, not a rendering artefact — turn it off in Preferences if it is distracting.
