Keyframes cannot be copied or pasted

Symptoms

If one or more of these match what you are seeing, you are on the right page.

• •Pasted keyframes land at the wrong time
• •Only some of the copied keyframes appear
• •Nothing pastes onto a different type of element
• •The relative timing between copied keyframes is lost

Causes and fixes

Ordered from most to least likely. Work down the list — each cause is paired with what to do about it.

1. 1

   Paste placed the keyframes at the playhead.

   Use Ctrl+Shift+V (Paste in Place) to paste at the same time positions as the source.

2. 2

   The target element type does not have those properties.

   Keyframes copy between elements of the same type. Pasting image filter keyframes onto a shape is ignored for the incompatible properties, which looks like a partial paste.

3. 3

   The keyframes were not actually selected.

   Click a keyframe diamond to select it, Shift+click to add, or drag a marquee in empty timeline space to select a range. Ctrl+A in the timeline selects everything on all tracks.

4. 4

   The playhead is outside the visible range.

   The paste succeeded somewhere off screen. Press Ctrl+Alt+F to fit the timeline to the full project duration and look again.
