Animation presets are not applying

Symptoms

If one or more of these match what you are seeing, you are on the right page.

• •Choosing a preset changes nothing on the canvas
• •The preset applies to one track but not the rest
• •New keyframes do not use the preset you expect
• •The preset appears applied in the panel but the motion is linear

Causes and fixes

Ordered from most to least likely. Work down the list — each cause is paired with what to do about it.

1. 1

   No keyframes were selected when the preset was applied.

   Select one or more keyframes first, then choose the preset from the Properties Panel, the right-click submenu, or the easing indicator dropdown on the keyframe itself.

   The preset is on the keyframe the motion arrives at.

   Easing governs the outgoing transition. Apply the preset to the keyframe the motion leaves for it to affect the segment you are watching.

3. 3

   The keyframes are Hold type.

   Hold keyframes do not interpolate, so no preset can shape them. Right-click and toggle to a standard keyframe.

4. 4

   New keyframes are not picking up the preset you want.

   Default Easing in Preferences under Animation Settings controls what new keyframes get. The factory default is Ease In-Out; set it to Linear if you prefer to apply easing deliberately.

5. 5

   The preset needs configuration.

   Stepped presets take a step count, and physical presets such as Bounce and Elastic overshoot the target — their effect is invisible over a very short transition. Lengthen the segment or open the graph editor to shape the curve directly.
